28 feb POND TREBČE– ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ‘FISH-FREE ZONE’
In the last few days we establish the ‘Fish-free Zone’ in the pond Trebče at Kozjansko park.
In the pond, that was emptied in November, we built a wooden barrier, that will provide shelter for amphibians away from the predatory fishes. The separation is needed as fishes may prey on amphibian eggs and larvae or their food. Some species can also eat the aquatic vegetation, where amphibians place their eggs and spawns. The separation of the pond and the establishment of the ‘Fish-free Zone’ will increase the reproductive succes and ensure safer conditions for growth and developement of amphibians from the larval stage to the young adults. Among the temporary protective fence and the ‘Frogpartrol’, this measure is another important step in conservation of amphibian populations in the area.
The pond is allready filled with water, the protective fence is set up, and now we are patiently waiting for higher temperatures and the beginning of spring migration in Trebče.
