Renovation of the Thatched Roof in Trebče

Renovation of the Thatched Roof in Trebče

We started with the renovation of the old thatched roof of the homestead next to the pond in Trebče. This pond is settled in an abandoned Bistrica River branch, which is by far the most important spawning ground for many amphibians in the spring. There is a busy road next to the pond, due to which in early spring, during the migration of amphibians, we have been setting up a temporary fence for more than 20 years in a row, helping them safely cross the road to the pond. In the coming years, an amphibian center will be established here.

The process of restoring a thatched roof is quite long, as it is necessary to first sow the grain, then reap in sheaves and thresh well – otherwise the roof is not well stable. After that the sheaves need to be combed and folded into new sheaves according to the length of the straw combed. Only then the process to cover the roof can begin.
