PRESENTATION OF THE LIFE AMPHICON PROJECT TO THE SOCIETAS HERPETOLOGICA SLOVENICA

Collaboration and networking with individuals, volunteers, NGO’s, public and private organizations and others interested in amphibian conservation, is one of the key factors for the successful implementation of the LIFE AMOHICON project. One of the most important stakeholders and at the same time a supporter of the project LIFE AMPHICON is the Societas Herpetologica Slovenica – Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles (SHS) which contributes an important part to the study, conservation and education of the general public about amphibians and reptiles in Slovenia. They have been continuously coordinating Toad patrol action since 2009 on the road Večna pot in Ljubljana next to the Department of Biology (the University of Ljubljana) and ZOO Ljubljana.

On Wednesday, 10th November 2021 we held an online lecture which was attended by 20 members of the SHS. We presented the LIFE AMPHICON project – AMPHIbian CONservation and Habitat Restoration focusing on the project achievements realised activities and the planned activities regarding amphibians and roads. SHS also contributed an important part to the conservation of amphibians in the area of the Ljubljansko barje, where they implemented several actions for saving amphibians on roads in the past. Project road sections in Bistra, Pako and Podkraj were also among them and the results represented important input data for the preparation of the project application. These are also the areas where we carried out intensive night road surveys in the LIFE AMPHICON project in 2020 and where the amphibian mitigation measures are planned. We presented the results of the amphibian monitoring carried out in 2020 and 2021 on project road sections in the Ljubljansko barje and Radensko polje.

The LIFE AMPHICON project team wants to continue the good cooperation with SHS with activities related to amphibian conservation, participation in workshops and other events.
