29 Nov DETERMINING THE SUITABILITY OF LOCATIONS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF WATER HABITATS
This winter, we will create 40 new water habitats for amphibians on Radensko polje. Before preparing the documentation for digging the ponds, we checked the suitability of the field. With the help of prof. dr. Uroš Stepišnik we made boreholes up to 2 meters deep and checked the thickness and granulometry of the alluvial clay deposits.
Radensko polje is a karst field that was formed on a limestone base. Limestone starts to slowly dissolve when in contact with water. With our new water habitats, we want to keep the water as long as possible, so it is important not to come across bedrock when digging. By investigating the soil, we ensured that there was a layer of impermeable clay. That will help us avoid the use of unnatural materials to retain water when establishing new aquatic habitats.
