THE BREEDING STATION FOR TRITURUS CARNIFEX OPENS ITS DOORS TO VISITORS

Last Thursday, 18 July 2024, the breeding station of the LIFE AMPHICON project in Kozjanski Park opened its doors. Visitors could see the larvae and participate in their feeding.

Support breeding is one of the effective ways to strengthen small and endangered amphibian populations. It can improve the survival rate of laid eggs and hatched larvae to young animals, thus increasing population abundance.

In Kozjanski Park, the breeding of Triturus carnifex from the Jovsi area (Natura 2000 Dobrava – Jovsi) started in 2021, and this year the breeding is taking place for the last time. In the past two years of breeding, we have released 307 young animals and are currently caring for 120 specimens in the breeding station.

Visitors could see our ‘greedy swimmers’, help with feeding and learn about the day-to-day work at the breeding station. We also introduced them to the purpose of the assisted breeding, amphibian issues in the project areas, and other LIFE AMPHICON activities.
